I just want to wish everyone a very Happy Columbus Day and the celebration of a man who took a risk in search of the New World and was successful.

He was the first to discover the the New World and set into motion the American dream:  those who take risks are rewarded when they are well thought out and have a little luck and faith on their side.

Columbus said it even better: “You can never cross the ocean unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.”

This holiday is much an American holiday, as it is a celebration for Italians.

We Cannot Let Our Nation’s History from Being Eroded

With this holiday, it is a time in this country where history has been and is being eroded. In Connecticut and this country, Columbus Day has been removed from the calendar. In addition, there are also school holidays that have been removed as well. Earlier this year, in Stamford, Connecticut, the board of education took away the school holidays of Veterans Day and Columbus Day.

We went with other republican local elected officials and republican candidates to protest this with a group of passionate Italian-Americans, Veterans and even some Italian-American Veterans to make our voices heard. These officials included State Senator Ryan Fazio, State Representative Tom O’Dea and candidates Tina Courpas, and Rudy Settimi. Not to make this political, but there were no democrats present. Our Veterans And Our Italian Americans In Stamford” *See Article). These individuals are all on Row B this November as they stand up for the truth and our history.

This is America. We celebrate our history for better or worse. Those who do not learn history are condemned to repeat it. The last four years have seen a massive erosion of our American history.

In the wake of the riots, there has been a desecration of many statutes of Columbus and calls for their removal. Many of these monuments were paid for by members of various Italian-American organizations and one reason for them was to demonstrate resilience to the discrimination experienced by many Italian immigrants.

Many Italian immigrants faced immense opposition here in America. Their support and honor of Columbus as one of their own has helped to establish a stronger relationship with the historical involvement of Italians in the development of the Americas long before the English.

There are many with long-standing ties to the fabric of our great nation. On this day, let’s celebrate Italian-Americans vast contribution to this country despite massive discrimination. Let us also appreciate their ability to overcome by persevering and conviction with a little faith to carry on Columbus’s determination. His success became the foundation of the American Dream before we had a nation.

Columbus also said - “Life has more imagination then we carry in our dreams.” Well lets make some history this November by electing candidates that fully support the American Dream and the courage of Columbus.
