Connecticut AG William Tong has been busy running all across the state to appear in meetings with local mayors, police chiefs, public school superintendents and NGOs, promising as best he can to "protect" everyone, including illegals, from the incoming Trump Administration using the state's TRUST Act.
He's already appeared in Westport, Stamford, Bridgeport, New Haven, Norwalk, and Hartford.
His latest appearance was in New London on January 15th, along with Mayor Michael Passero, Public School Superintendent Cynthia Ritchie, Police Chief Brian Wright, and Michael Doyle, a senior counsel for IRIS, the Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services.
Much like all of the previous meetings, Tong used fear to deliver his message.
“This guy and his crowd are capable of great cruelty, who don’t care about the rule of law or precedent,” said Tong said, refusing to even mention Trump’s name. “They’re going to come faster, harder and more aggressively.”
“Now is the time and we are ready for this fight,” Tong told a number of anxious people in the room. “That doesn’t mean we’ll always be successful. But I mean to build a firewall around every family in New London.”
Human Services Director Jeanne Milstein, the event moderator, reminded attendees that, "it doesn’t matter what your immigration status is to any New London department. We are not a city of ‘us and them,’ but a city of we.”
Mayor Passero described New London as a “beacon of values”... even though the "value" of protecting illegals from ICE seems to be at odds with federal immigration law.
Chief Wright assured folks that police “have no interest in knowing someone’s immigration status,” and reminded that police policies call for protecting the “rights and dignity of all citizens,” including illegals.
Superintendent Ritchie promised that the public schools maintain an "all-inclusive approach" to students regardless of their immigration status.
So pretty much the same thing as all of the other meetings.
Meanwhile, State Sen. Ryan Fazio just proposed eliminating the TRUST Act that makes Connecticut a sanctuary state in the first place, something which Tong and democrats will most likely fiercely oppose.
