Darien Pride has announced it will be holding a special event entitled "An Evening With Jax" at the First Congregational Church in Darien on Friday, May 19th.
The star of the evening, a drag queen named Jax, grew up and attended school in Darien, so the event is being billed as a homecoming of sorts.
The event will include two lip sync numbers as well as a question and answer session with Jax in between the numbers. The focus of the questions will be about Jax's time on the television show Drag Race with RuPaul, growing up as a queer person of color in Darien, and how to make Darien more inclusive for people like Jax.
A spokesperson for Darien Pride felt the show would be appropriate for children as young as middle school, but a child of any age would be welcome, so long as the child could stay awake for a show with an 8pm start time.
No mention was made whatsoever about the sexual nature of drag, or that it might not be appropriate for young children.
Instead the attitude was "why not?"
First Congregational Church indicated that it was "providing the space" but not organizing the event.
When asked if offering up space for a drag show where children might be present goes against what the bible says about harming children, the church declined to comment.
