A 21-year-old University of New Haven (UNH) club hockey captain was killed in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 91 in North Haven after colliding with a twice-deported Mexican national who was living in Connecticut, according to exclusive reporting by Border Hawk News.
Ryan Dennis O’Shea, of Stony Point, New York, was driving a 2018 Honda Accord southbound in the left lane near Exit 9 on I-91 South around 11:45 p.m. on October 16, returning to campus after a hockey game, when a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado traveling the wrong way struck his vehicle head-on. The impact forced his Accord into the left-center lane, where it was hit by a Jeep, and then into the right lane and shoulder, where it was struck by a 2022 GMC Terrain. O’Shea was pronounced dead at the scene. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later determined the cause of death was blunt impact injury of the head, neck, torso, and extremities. Four other people sustained minor injuries.
The driver of the Silverado, 31-year-old Guillermo Carmona-Lopez of Bridgeport, suffered serious life-threatening injuries and was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital. As of later reports he remained hospitalized and had not been charged.
Border Hawk obtained a statement from the Department of Homeland Security confirming Carmona-Lopez’s immigration history: He was arrested by Border Patrol in May 2013 after illegally entering the United States, issued an expedited removal, and removed from the country. He then illegally reentered near the Rio Grande Valley—a felony—was arrested again by Border Patrol in May 2013, and received a final order of removal on May 30, 2013. He later reentered the country at an unknown time and place.
It remains unclear whether Carmona-Lopez will face charges related to the crash. Border Hawk contacted Connecticut State Police for updates on the investigation and his condition but received no additional information. The Connecticut Centinal contacted ICE to determine whether a detainer would be issued.
This is the latest accident that should never have happened.
But given Connecticut’s “welcoming” stance, first spelled out in the Trust Act in 2013 and subsequently “strengthened” by Connecticut Democrats, which entices illegal aliens to move here, a pattern of tragic accidents is exactly what one would expect. For example:
