A quasi-state administrative agency, the Vermont Principals’ Association (VPA), likely violated the Mid Vermont Christian School’s constitutionally protected right to the Free Exercise of their religion according to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. This ruling has implications in our state because the case is situated in the Second Circuit of federal courts – which covers Connecticut. In 2023, Mid Vermont Christian School forfeited an athletic competition against a team that had a male pretending to be a girl. In response, the VPA kicked them out of the athletic league and also banned them from all extra-curricular competitions.

The Second Circuit ruled on September 9, 2025, that the way the VPA did it was tantamount to being “hostile” to religion. As a result, the 2nd Circuit Court directed the lower district court to reverse course and implement an injunction against the VPA’s ban. Mid Vermont Christian School gets to continue to play and forfeit unfair competitions with trans-identifying athletes. This case is worth watching because while not a perfect ruling yet, the trajectory is promising. If you are aware of a private school being punished for practicing their religious beliefs in Connecticut, including not “buying into” the false ideology of transgenderism, the Family Institute of Connecticut would be happy to learn more and possibly direct you to legal or other resources.
