HARTFORD – Senior Deputy Senate Republican Leader Rob Sampson (R-Wolcott) and State Sen. Jeff Gordon (R-Woodstock) today marked the observance of Bill of Rights Day. On Dec. 15, 1791, the Bill of Rights—the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution—was ratified.

“The Bill of Rights guarantees our God-given natural rights,” said Senators Sampson and Gordon. “It protects our rights from being abridged or ignored by our government. This is fundamental to why we have the Bill of Rights.”

The Bill of Rights guarantees essential freedoms, including the right to free speech, freedom of religion, freedom to peacefully assemble, the right to bear arms, the right to a fair trial, and protections against unlawful search and seizure, among others.

"As we observe Bill of Rights Day, we are reminded of the importance of our rights as citizens in our democracy and society. Each citizen’s rights must be respected and upheld. This is all the more important in Connecticut as the state government chips away at all of our rights,” they said.  “We are proud every day to work with people throughout our communities and state to fight for and defend our individual rights, parental rights, and medical freedoms.”
