A screenshot circulating on social media shows a post from “Toya Pyt Fernandez” — identified by the West Hartford Republican Town Committee as LaToya Fernandez Yagaloff, the Democrat Vice Chair of the West Hartford Board of Education — that has local conservatives and parents rightly fuming.
In the post, Yagaloff writes that slavery began in 1619, remained the “legal foundation” of the American colonies in 1776, and that celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary is like "celebrating a nightmare ... that created the conditions for white privilege ..." She then asked, "Would you celebrate the historic beginning of the Holocaust or other Genocides and atrocities?!”
She adds: “Why can’t we all just be American on July 4th? Because we all were not even considered human on July 4th 1776.”
The West Hartford GOP quickly called it out, noting that a person “entrusted with your children’s education” is pushing this rhetoric.
Those weren't Yagaloff's only eye-opening comments about the country's founding.
She dedicated her Fourth of July run to her "ancestors whose feet and ankles were shackled" in America 250 years ago, and claimed the "only reason the economy was ever good" in America was a result of "over 200 years of free labor from the Black Slave Trade."
"We literally built this country...So when y'all say "I see both sides" ..... there's only one side to that!" she exclaimed.
Yagaloff, a "DEI leader" who promotes "inclusive and culturally responsive education," works as a Restorative Justice facilitator and trainer. She describes her pedagogy as "grounded in decolonizing restorative justice practices that center reconciliation between oppressed peoples and the descendants of oppressors."
She served as the first DEI Officer for the City of Norwalk, and the Restorative Justice coordinator for state of Connecticut, where she provided trainings in juvenile detention facilities and DCF group homes to staff and youth.
She is the author (with Ellis Raymond Stephens) of the book “Truth: An Empowerment Guide for Youth and Allies” (published ~2020) which addresses self-confidence/identity, social issues and systems of oppression, depression/suicide prevention, and healthy relationships/friendships.
She has drawn inspiration from controversial figures such as discredited race-baiter Ibram X. Kendi, and Paulo Freire, the man who turned education into a Marxist Trojan horse for ideological indoctrination, where students are no longer taught to master facts or reason but are instead radicalized as "oppressed" activists in an endless oppressor-oppressed struggle.
She once put together a video to explain what it means when she said "defund the police," and reminisced over "spittin' some conscious bars" about Black Lives Matter when she was a hip-hop artist. She cited "being in a revolution right now" and says they are "in it to win it" — and winning means equity for everyone.
She was first appointed to the Board in September 2023 to fill a vacancy and then elected to a full four-year term (2023–2027) as a Democrat in the November 2023 municipal election.
"It has not been easy, and I show up as my full self, with no code-switching," writes Yagaloff. "I am not political."
