A poll released Sunday by Gallup shows that, when it comes to core values that Americans say the nation needs most, Democrats ranked “equality” as their top choice while Republicans selected “patriotism” as number one.

“Democrats are far more likely to say the country needs equality, fairness and kindness, while Republicans are far more likely to say the country needs responsibility and patriotism,” wrote Gallup’s Ellyn Maese.

A stark outcome of the survey is that, when asked, “Which of the following do you think most Americans, regardless of politics or background, still share?” no single character value of 12 that were offered was chosen by 50% or more of respondents.

While freedom clocked in at 38%, patriotism at 32%, and service at 30%, only 13% of respondents viewed each of the character traits of courage (“deciding to do what’s right in the face of personal cost”); honesty (“telling the truth, even when it’s hard”); or integrity (“acting consistently with your values, even when no one is watching”) as values shared by most Americans.

When Gallup asked respondents, “In your opinion, which matters more today?” and the choices were only two: “people respecting different values” vs. “people sharing the same values,” large majorities of U.S. adults (79%); Republicans (72%); Independents (81%); and Democrats (84%) replied that “people respecting different values” was more important.

“This preference for respecting different values is consistent with Americans’ expectations of public leaders,” Maese wrote. “In the same survey, 70% said it is very important that elected leaders work across party lines, even when doing so could hurt their political careers.”

According to Gallup, the largest differences in views of which values America needs most are seen when respondents are grouped by age and political affiliation.

“Adults aged 65 and older are far more likely to say the country needs honesty (47% vs. 29% of those aged 18 to 39 and 32% of those aged 40 to 64) and patriotism (32% vs. 12% and 22%, respectively),” the report noted.

Gallup states the results of this poll are based on “self-administered web surveys conducted May 12-22, 2026, with a random sample of 3,199 adults, aged 18 and older, who are members of the Gallup Panel™,” which is recruited using “probability-based, random sampling methods.”

The survey has a margin of sampling error of ±2.1 percentage points at the 95% confidence level.
