Like it or not, early voting has just passed the Connecticut Senate. It now awaits action by Governor Lamont before it goes to voters in November 2024.
Registrars from across the state have already expressed concern over whether they would have sufficient funding and the necessary staffing to cover a longer voting window.
Republicans are worried that early voting could undermine already fragile trust in elections.
Connecticut State Senator Rob Sampson suggested the early voting measure was like “opening a giant door to ballot harvesting, to mail-in voting and to the things that have brought a rise to those contested elections across the country.”
Meanwhile, the ACLU of Connecticut welcomed this legislation, claiming it will make voting more inclusive and expansive.
According to the press release, ACLU CT public policy and advocacy director Claudine Constant said, "Early voting is good for all of us, and it’s especially good for Black, Latinx, and other voters of color, LGBTQ voters, women, parents, elderly people, and disabled people, because it makes the ballot box more accessible. If implemented correctly, early voting is a step forward for racial justice, gender equity, and disability rights."
In case you are wondering, ACLU CT lists Racial Justice as the very first issue on its list of priorities, and suggests that "systemic racism" and other barriers "disenfranchise Black and Latinx voters" in particular.
So ACLU CT thinks that same-day voting is racist?
Obviously this is the predicate for increased fraud in the Connecticut elections. I fully expect ranked choice voting to be the next big voting legislation to pass in Connecticut.
