The Connecticut Education Association (CEA) has made it clear it wants "ICE out of schools" and that it stands in solidarity with their education peers in Minnesota who are demanding the same.
"Recent actions by ICE in Minnesota—including the shooting of a community member, the unjust detention of a Minnesota educator, and the use of pepper spray on students—are unconscionable in a civil society," said CEA. "ICE’s continued presence near schools puts students, educators, and families at serious risk and makes communities less safe. Schools must remain places where students can learn and educators can teach without fear."
“ICE has no place in schools,” added CEA President Kate Dias. “Children are not criminals, and schools must be safe places for them to learn and thrive.”
Dias subsequently issued a statement on January 27th to underscore her feelings about ICE and the on-going revolution against ICE enforcing federal immigration law in Minnesota.
"We are devastated by the loss of life in Minnesota and the immense stress, trauma, fear, and strain this situation has placed on educators, students, and families. The incidents involving federal ICE agents have shaken our community to its core, and our hearts are with every teacher, student, and loved one who has been affected by this senseless violence," Dias said.
"As educators, we work tirelessly to make our schools safe, welcoming, and nurturing places for all children — whether they are children of immigrants or children of ICE agents — so that they can learn without fear," she continued. "But we can’t do that with armed ICE agents operating in and around our schools, disrupting learning, shattering a sense of safety, and filling families and staff with anxiety."
Dias urged local, state, and federal leaders to "take immediate action to protect students and educators and ensure that every child can learn in a safe and welcoming environment."
Republican state senators said Dias should resign or be terminated after her statement.
“The statement is 100% false, wrong, irresponsible and blatant fear-mongering,” wrote Republican Sens. Eric Berthel, Heather Somers, Rob Sampson, Henri Martin, Paul Cicarella and Ryan Fazio in a release.
“Where’s the accountability?” the senators said. “She must resign. If she won’t resign, CEA must terminate her employment."
"She knows ICE agents are not dragging students out of classrooms. She knows that Connecticut state law requires a school district to identify a ‘coordinator’ for ICE interactions. The ICE agent works through that person. She portrays Connecticut schools as unwelcoming places filled with fear because of ICE," wrote the Republicans. "There has not been a single incident in a Connecticut school where ICE agents have done any of what she is proclaiming."
They called the statements from Dias "lies" and "reckless."
"This type of behavior is creating fear and division in our communities. That’s the opposite of leadership,“ concluded the Republicans.
“I think it is ironic that they are calling for my resignation for doing exactly what I am duly elected to do, which is to protect the interest of teachers, public education and students so the disconnect between what they are unhappy with and the actual role that I am elected to serve is a little disconcerting,” Dias said in response to the senators.
Dias denied sharing misinformation.
She also underscored the "importance" of the Trust Act which protects criminal illegals in this state... even though a new poll shows a majority of Americans agree that coming here illegally is breaking the law, and support deporting illegals.
