The U.S. flag should always be raised first and placed in a position of honor at the center and at the highest point among a group of flags.
But that's not how it happens at Discovery Academy in Wethersfield, a CREC School of Excellence for students from Pre-K to 5th grade.
You can see from the picture taken outside Discovery Academy last week that the pride flag is hanging at the same height, or perhaps even a bit higher than the U.S. flag.
The pride flag has also been raised before the American flag in the morning.
The rules for displaying other flags on separate flagpoles next to the American flag are governed by the United States Flag Code (Title 4, United States Code, Chapter 1, Section 7).
When the flags are flown from adjacent staffs, the U.S. flag should be hoisted first and lowered last. No flag or pennant may be placed above the flag of the United States.
Residents are upset about the display.
"I feel it offends me as a resident, as American and as a believer that what God calls shame shouldn't be celebrated," complained one person. "What can be done?"
The Centinal contacted Discovery Academy to inquire about the pride flag.
The receptionist confirmed that indeed the pride flag is still flying, and at the same level as the U.S. flag (or perhaps slightly higher again as in the photo). We pointed out that it was a violation of United States Flag Code to have the pride flag flying at the same height or higher than the U.S. flag, and asked to speak to the appropriate person in charge of the flag, presumably the principal.
The receptionist got flustered and instead of transferring the call, she hung up.
We called back and left a message, but don't have high hopes for a response.
Note that as a CREC school, Discovery Academy is all about equity, which is part of the mission, vision and core values; diversity, which students, parents and staff are expected to fully embrace; and racial and social justice, which was highlighted during "Racial Justice Action Week" in January.
Maybe it should just be called a "CREC School of Indoctrination"?
That might be more accurate.
