Connecticut Democrats are coming after gas-powered leaf blowers in the 2025 legislative session.
The Environment Committee introduced legislation that would totally prohibit the use of hand-held or backpack gas-powered leaf blowers in the state of Connecticut by the year 2029.
The proposed bill, H.B. 6263 was sponsored by Rep. Aimee Berger-Girvalo, Sen. Julie Kushner, Sen. Ceci Maher, Rep. Michael "MJ" Shannon, Rep. Laurie Sweet, and Greenwich's very own Rep. Hector Arzeno.
Under H.B. 6263 each municipality in the state would be required to develop a plan to phase out use of all hand-held and backpack gas-powered leaf blowers during a two-year period starting January 1, 2027.
Then, "on and after January 1, 2029, no person shall use, sell, offer for sale or distribute in this state any gas-powered leaf blower, whether hand-held or backpack style."
As Greenwich residents already know, a seasonal ban on gas-powered leaf blowers championed by environmental activists from Quiet Yards Greenwich took effect last summer.
The seasonal ban aligns with the broader Democrat / globalist climate change agenda, including the goal of reaching "net zero emissions" by 2050, which means stopping the use of fossil fuels altogether. So banning gas-powered leaf blowers is just a palatable beginning, sure to be followed by successive bans on other gas-powered items until you finally accept your fossil fuel-free, all electric future, like it or not.
We wrote a few articles about the impact of the seasonal leaf blower ban in Greenwich in 2024.
In July, we detailed a host of emerging issues, including the fire hazard from lithium batteries, worker safety, rising equipment theft, equipment servicing delays, and wasted police time chasing unfounded nuisance complaints. Let's not forget the exorbitant cost to switch to electric that is breaking the backs of many small and immigrant-owned businesses, or the fact that even the Greenwich town administrator requested a 3-year waiver due to high implementation costs.
In September, we touched on how Quiet Yards failed to mention the fact that lithium-ion battery components release toxic per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)— dangerous forever chemicals—into the environment. We alerted State Rep. Arzeno about the potential impacts of PFAS on both the landscapers being forced to use electric blowers and on the environment, but he never followed up like he said he would. Maybe he just doesn't like us because he's one of those guys calling Trump a dictator? Or maybe it's because he's also on the Greenwich RTM and voted in favor of the ban?
The December article was a bit more snarky than the others.
That's because landscapers were photographed breaking the rules on the property of the Quiet Yards founder during the height of the summertime ban. And because an RTM member who voted in favor of the ban was exposed for her ties to a property that repeatedly violated the gas-powered leaf blower ban. And because the Town of Greenwich Departments of Public Works and Parks and Recreation estimated converting just half of the town's leaf blower fleet from gas to electric would cost a whopping $476,000--that's roughly $238 per acre.
We felt the Greenwich RTM rushed to push the ban, and that if and when the market is ready, landscapers would naturally make the switch to electric, or perhaps invest in newer, ultra-quiet, and more efficient gas blowers.
Yet considering the democrat supermajority in Hartford, we would not be surprised to see H.B. 6263 get passed.
The irony of it all is that if Elon Musk, the man the left describes as a "billionaire nazi who has access to your SSN," ever follows through on that old Tesla electric leaf blower idea, his company would stand to benefit directly from the Connecticut democrats' proposed legislation.
How might the Tesla Takedown crowd react to Tesla-branded electric leaf blowers? Would the left would start to eat its own, protesting against the very democrats who handed Elon the opportunity to become even richer? And will progressive activists keep those Tesla protests peaceful so they don't get arrested as domestic terrorists?
By the way, you can register to speak and submit written testimony on this bill if you so desire, just make sure to do so by March 16th.
The public hearing is scheduled for March 17th, and you can watch it on Youtube.
