At a national level, Left-wing progressives have been busy redefining the English language. This comes in two flavors. First is “finding offense” -- you know, words like “mother” redefined as “childbearing person” so as not to offend the 0.001% of women who have children while believing themselves to be men. “Illegal immigrant” is now offensive, even if such “unauthorized” and “undocumented” person has been found to have broken the law and ordered deported. Perhaps the most famous such list of “harmful” language is the one from Stanford University, which has since been pulled but lives on in the archives of WSJ servers.
Of course, those offended are ONLY justified in taking offense if they are part of a Left-wing favored group. So Republicans being called “Nazis” or “Antisemites” by Democrats is acceptable. Another category are words that have been redefined in progressive garb. Google wasn’t of much help, so Centinal dug up this bad boy from 1993, and did some comparing to the online modern equivalent.
Some things haven’t changed: Woman 1993: The female human being. 2023: 1. an adult female person. Why did Justice Jackson have difficulty with this? Perhaps Webster’s has fallen behind the times?
Some things have changed:
“Gender” is a matter of psychology. 1993: Sex. 2023: the behavioral, cultural, or psychological traits typically associated with one sex.
“Equity” is about bias. 1993: the quality of being fair or impartial. 2023: justice according to natural law or right specifically: freedom from bias or favoritism.
“Socialism” has become “egalitarian”. 1993: a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole. 2023: any of various egalitarian economic and political theories or movements advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods.
“Communism” has an “as needed” clause. 1993: A system or theory of social organization based on holding all property in common, actual ownership being ascribed to the community as a whole or to the state. 2023: a system in which goods are owned in common and are available to all as needed.
“Democratic socialism didn’t exist in 1993 along with the idea that socialism is good while communism is bad despite the common “you don’t own anything” concept." 2023: A political movement advocating a gradual and peaceful transition from capitalism to socialism by democratic means (i.e., it’s better if the state takes over everything more slowly – that way you won’t notice).
Current with the times, your progressive dictionary has erased Israel. In 1993 Israel was: A republic in SW Asia on the Mediterranean, formed as a Jewish state in 1948. In 2023 Israel is: gone!

Locally, Greenwich leftists are busy adopting words to their own use, and they’re not quite in accordance with dictionary definitions, so one has to try and figure out what they really mean by listening to them over time. For example, they say they are “fiscally responsible,” but what does that mean to them?
At the Board of Estimate and Taxation (BET) debate, they clarified that “fiscally responsible” doesn’t include vetting or checking on the requests for funding presented to them. The Democrats said that they felt their job was to find creative ways to fund projects presented. So their “responsibility” is not to provide any checks and balances, nor to ascertain whether the need is real nor whether the plan is sound nor whether the price is right. They just fund it, whatever it is.
The BET also clarified that while they promise not to start long-term borrowing, as Mr. Alchek said, all other towns use long-term borrowing extensively, and he made a lot of money off those towns. Greenwich Democrats have regularly used appeals to numbers (for bag ordinances, fracking ordinances, and zoning regulations) to explain their behavior (other towns do it so we should too), and so you can expect long-term borrowing despite promises to the contrary.
