A coalition of organizations and parents has been formed to encourage legislators to support bills to protect children in Connecticut. The bills would require parents or guardians to be notified in the event their child begins a social gender transition in school and also to permit schools to set aside some sports teams as “women only.” The coalition is seeking public discussion through the legislative process for these two important issues.

Parental Involvement
The State of Connecticut, through its Department of Education’s guidelines (2017 and 2024), encourages schools to hide a social gender transition from parents. At least 27 Connecticut school boards have adopted policies to hide social gender transitions from parents.
A social gender transition is a psycho-social treatment used by professionals to address gender dysphoria. It involves changing a child’s name, pronouns, clothing, using tuckers and/or binders, use of an opposite sex bathroom, locker room, providing “change rooms” at school, rooming with opposite sex when traveling on overnight field trips and more.
Schools do not have authority to hide this important medical information from parents and guardians. Children do best when their parents are involved and schools must not keep secrets about potentially life changing behavior. Not only do children do better, but schools are inadequately staffed to provide this level of psychological support for children.
Attorney General Tong has also contributed to the problem by filing an amicus brief against a Connecticut mom trying to protect her children. According to the lawsuit, Marissa Silvestri’s children attended school in Massachusetts. She filed a lawsuit against her children’s school district for socially transitioning both of them without her knowledge or consent. In the case of her son, the school deceived her and the father for months. The sympathetic counselor who informed Marissa was also fired by the school district. There were no allegations of abuse by the parents. Attorney General Tong is using the power of his Connecticut office against this Connecticut mom. He filed a brief against Marissa and the father, insisting that the relationship between teacher and student was more important. The Attorney General is reflecting a state policy that has never been approved or discussed by the General Assembly.
The stakes are very high and the science is not settled. Children who are permitted to naturally experience puberty resolve their dysphoria at a rate of 80 to 95%. A recent study indicates that 94% of children who begin a psycho-social transition plan will still identify as transgender 5 years later. Social transitioning sets children on an almost irreversible pathway to experimental use of puberty blockers, artificial hormones and more, becoming life-long customers of pharmaceutical companies and put at risk of sterilization, surgical removal of healthy body parts, bone fragility, obesity, heart problems and worse. A social gender transition is not an insignificant decision and children need their parents to be involved.
Save Women’s Sports Bill
Connecticut women are being forced to share the field and locker room with men across Connecticut. This puts them in physical danger. A lawsuit by some Connecticut girls was revived recently and should be addressed by the legislature. Schools should be able to set aside “women only” sports teams without fear of being punished by regulating authorities.
We know that some Connecticut girls have experienced the trauma of losing championship and scholarship opportunities and that women have been injured by men on the field. The wishful thinking of gender activists is putting our young women in danger and our bill would enable schools to take measures to protect them.
What are the coalition's goals?
According to a 2023 poll, 71% of registered voters support legislation requiring schools to tell parents if their child wants to change their gender identity at school. Connecticut has had no open discussion of the proper role of the state when it comes to gender identity and children or permitting men to compete in women’s sports. Both can put children at risk for physical and mental health danger.
The same is true of women’s sports. According to a 2023 Gallup poll “A larger majority of Americans now (69%) than in 2021 (62%) say transgender athletes should only be allowed to compete on sports teams that conform with their birth gender.” It is time for the Connecticut legislature to address this issue and not let administrative agencies and non-elected sports conferences govern without authority.
Legislators have submitted letters to legislative committees asking them to permit this discussion through the bill process including public hearings. It is time for the General Assembly to add some common sense to the discussion and have an honest debate about protecting children.
