If you’ve ever wondered what happens when bored progressive activists run out of things to cry about but still need an excuse to yell into a megaphone, look no further than the latest absurdity from the Connecticut Citizen Action Group.
On July 17, the fifth anniversary of Congressman John Lewis’s death, CCAG and a collective of activist groups — including the New Haven Federation of Teachers, Unidad Latina en Acción, CT Students for a Dream, and CT Faith Based Immigrant Support Network (whatever that means) — are holding a protest at Tweed New Haven Airport. Why? Because Avelo Airlines flies people places. And some of those people are in the country illegally.
Apparently, honoring John Lewis now means harassing an ultra-low-cost airline because ICE charters deportation flights. Forget everything Lewis actually stood for—like voting rights, peaceful protest, and civil rights legislation. In 2024, “Good Trouble” means yelling at flight attendants and demanding that airport terminals become sanctuary cities.
The organizers even had the nerve to call this a “moral reckoning” and “a new front in the struggle for freedom.” Sorry, but the “struggle for freedom” isn’t happening at Gate 3 while someone’s trying to board a $49 flight to Fort Lauderdale. It’s not brave. It’s not moral. It’s political theater staged by people who think “civil disobedience” means having drum circles next to TSA.
And of course, no modern leftist rally would be complete without invoking the evil Trump boogeyman and screeching about “voter suppression” bills like the SAVE Act—which, spoiler alert, simply asks that people prove they’re citizens before voting. Scandalous!
They’re also outraged that some states want to criminalize protests that shut down highways or block ambulances. Yes, apparently it’s fascism to expect protesters to not shut down a city during rush hour.
There are approximately 20 other “Good Trouble” events across the state on the same day. So if you couldn’t make it to Tweed to scream at airplanes, don’t worry—there’s a Marxist Cosplay Rally at a town near you.
John Lewis believed in peaceful protest, but more importantly, he believed in purpose. He didn’t block budget airlines. He didn’t scream about ICE flights on Facebook Live. He didn’t confuse “civil rights” with “illegal immigration.” And he sure didn’t turn activism into a never-ending open mic night for every fringe group with a hashtag and a federal grant.
If you want to honor John Lewis, read Walking with the Wind. If you want to waste a Thursday afternoon yelling at a plane, call CCAG.
Either way, leave the man’s legacy out of your airport tantrum.
