The Hartford Courant reported on August 1st that Judge Melissa Streeto gave her law clerks special candies. Valentines Day came early for the law clerks in the Connecticut Superior Court in Rockville. Each clerk received a shmeckle shaped “Suck on a bag of Dicks” candies bag with a hand written note penned by Streeto: “I didn’t forget about you darling xo.”

The head honcho in charge of the the Judiciary is Judge Elizabeth Bozzuto. According to the Courant, Bozzuto “spoke with Judge Melissa L. Streeto and has made it clear that she, as well as the public, expect the highest level of professionalism from a Judge of the Superior Court. Judge Bozzuto believes that Judge Streeto is doing the right thing in self-reporting this unfortunate incident to the Judicial Review Council.  She is also requiring that Judge Streeto submit to remedial training. Judge Bozzuto expects to never encounter such conduct from Judge Streeto again.”

Judge Streeto apologized and stated: “I recently provided to staff members candy that was inappropriate. It was meant as a gag gift for staff with whom I am friendly. It is clear to me that my action was completely unacceptable, unprofessional, and unbecoming of my position. I take full responsibility for it and sincerely apologize for my poor judgment. As such, I have referred this matter to the Judicial Review Council for an investigation and review. I have also been in contact with the Chief Court Administrator and will be completing additional training as directed by her. I can assure court staff, my colleagues, and members of the public that such an incident will never happen again.”

Give me a break! If Streeto was a male Judge who passed out candies shaped like a woman’s genitalia and told them to suck on them to law clerks with a note of hugs and kisses she would have been tarred and feathered by Judge Bozzuto. Instead Streeto was given a very mild warning. Don’t do it again. Sit in the corner and write “I will not tell my law clerks to suck on penis shaped candies ever again” one hundred times.

Melissa Streeto Brechlin was appointed Superior Court Judge in 2024 by Governor Ned Lamont. Streeto graduated from Quinnipiac Law School, ranked at the bottom 10% of nationwide law schools when she graduated some 25 years ago, and worked for the appellate division of the State’s Attorneys office for 23 years filing appellate briefs in criminal and habeas appeals, probably the most boring job on earth, and not very difficult, you could train a monkey to file these briefs. Streeto never seemed to stand out in her little law niche or won any big cases as far as I can tell. The State wins almost 99% of all criminal appeals filed. How could you tell if she was any good at her job? Apparently Governor Lamont thought she would make an excellent choice for Jurist. She earned about $150K a year as a State’s attorney and now earns over $200K a year to put on her black robes. She was appointed by the Chief Administrative Judge Bozzuto to rule on criminal habeas cases in Rockville, where almost 99% of the cases get decided in the State’s favor.

Why would Judge Bozzuto appoint a State prosecutor, who is already predisposed to rule in the State’s favor, to the habeas court? Is it because Streeto has no other experience in the law other than her narrow niche? If you are Black, poor and mentally challenged you don’t have a chance with your public defender arguing your habeas case before Judge Streeto. If your name is Michael Skakel, and are White, wealthy and related to the Kennedy family, you have a better chance at winning your habeas appeal. I worked on habeas cases that were assigned to me for many years by the Public Defender’s Office. I thought there were too many cases that were just rejected for no other reason than to clear the docket. Judicial efficiency is ingrained in the Connecticut Judiciary. If your docket gets backed up, you can get transferred into some dead end judge job in eviction court or 100 miles from where you live.

Justice in Connecticut at times can be arbitrary and erratic. I should know, I have been trying to regain my law license for ten years and keep getting told that I have to shut down this blog, despite violating my First Amendment rights, if I ever want to practice law again. Meanwhile Yale Law school graduate Reginald Dwanye Betts, who was convicted of carjacking, attempted robbery and firearms was admitted to the Connecticut Bar like a breeze after he had Michael Wishnie, a Yale Law professor, volunteer to represent him and submit more than 200 letters from prominent Yalies and members of the American Bar. Connecticut resident Tyree Smith, who killed and ate Angel Gonzalez in 2013, was recently granted conditional release to live in a group home in Waterbury by the State Board of Parole, after having been ordered by the Superior Court to serve for 60 years in a mental institution. It only took a cannibal ten years to get released from a mental hospital prison in Connecticut.

Is Judge Streeto in that picture I posted above? She has no online presence. Its as if she doesn’t exist. She doesn’t write a blog or post on social media, which I have learned is the death kneel to practicing law in the “Constitution State.”
