Gloria Steinem, one of the most influential women in American history, passed away at the age of 92. She was at the vanguard of the feminist movement in the 1960s and 1970s and her agenda prevailed.
The feminist movement is basically about one word – control. And for a woman to have control over her life, she needs two things – money in the bank and access to abortion. Without either, a woman is subject to vicissitudes of some man, a government hand out and biological dice – unless she chooses to be celibate and lonely.
But a closer look at the feminist movement reveals that Steinem’s views benefited two groups, upper middle-class women and high-IQ women, which is why these two groups are her biggest fans.
Steinem’s main claim to fame was fighting for abortion access. She even dedicated her book My Life on the Road to the doctor who arranged her illegal abortion in England when she was twenty-two years old. Like Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks who also trumpeted her abortion, Steinem believed that the reason for her success in life was because she was not saddled with taking care of a child.
Upper middle-class women have the same experience. Most upper middle-class men do not wish to marry young but want a guaranteed sexual partner. Thus, they demand potential spouses move in with them for a “trial run” to satisfy this powerful primitive evolutionary drive. Many women waste the best years of their lives hoping some live-in boyfriend will marry them and having the option of aborting a pregnancy that their live-in boyfriend demands enhances their odds of eventual marriage and an upper middle-class lifestyle.
The same is true for the high-IQ women. In the past, becoming a highly paid professional such as a lawyer, medical doctor or finance expert was problematic for smart women, not only because of discrimination in the admission processes, but also because the education and training required for these jobs meant delaying childbearing until thirty and often beyond. Legalized abortion solved this problem.
Furthermore, as women entered the workplace, corporate America realized women were great workers and could make money off their labor. To paraphrase Charlotte Whitton, the first female mayor of Ottawa, Canada: “In order for women to succeed in the workplace, they must work twice as hard as men. Luckily this is not difficult.”
But what about the 80% of women who are not upper middle class or gifted with high-IQs? As pointed out by the feminist nemesis Phyllis Schlafly, these women once had superior rights that protected them. They could not be forced to join the military where they could be killed or maimed. They received preference in alimony payments and did not have to make a living in dangerous work such as coal mining or combat.
Schlafly accurately predicted economic serfdom for women. She foresaw that dual incomes would cause housing prices to skyrocket. And she hit the nail on the head. Women now work like dogs to pay for increased housing costs while spending a fortune on childcare and then returning to a home where they are still responsible for most of the household chores.
Furthermore, men no longer take responsibility for their sexual behavior. The idea that legalized abortion liberated women is the biggest scam going. Legalized abortion liberated men. Now an unwanted pregnancy is no longer “their problem,” it is “her problem.” While the Planned Parenthood crowd predicted that legalized abortion would reduce out-of-wedlock births, the exact opposite occurred – as anyone with a normal libido could have foreseen. Many women now have a choice, have an abortion or live in poverty as a single mother. Given this option, it is amazing that the abortion rate isn’t higher.
The irony is that many of the liberal women who are Steinem acolytes are miserable, in spite of being the most pampered demographic in human history and receiving everything they desire. Primary care doctors observed years ago about the travails of satisfying “angry women.” The political class eventually caught up with this trend labelling them as AWFULs (Angry White Female Upscale Liberals).
But for the foreseeable future, Steinem’s worldview will be public policy. But few people are happy with it. America is no longer a place where one income can support a family thanks to Steinem and her followers. Thus, public opinion polls state that 70% of the population believe America is on the wrong track, no matter what party occupies the White House.
