Connecticut Democrats have little to worry about for a variety of reasons, the most important of which is: political problems become worrisome only when the opposition party or an independent media has the political resources and the inclination to exploit the problem.
We know that Connecticut’s Democrat Party has been for 30 years and more the unquestioned dominant party in our state. This dominance is longer-lived in the state’s cities, now dependent on majority Democrats for funding. Hartford’s last Republican mayor was Ann Uccello who presided as mayor from 1967-1971.
Political dominance, once attained, is relatively easy to maintain – particularly in a state like Connecticut in which the media, far less independent than it had been during the golden age of bipartisan government in Connecticut, partly for business reasons favors the hegemonic party in power.
One of the reasons “power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely” is that opposition to absolute power is at a minimum when a single party has swept the boards of active opposition and corrective active resistance has been routed by aggressive hegemonic governance. Under such conditions, the dominant political power needn’t worry that the angels of our better nature will veto improvident legislation. The political orientation also changes: The dominant party becomes more aggressive and less attuned to political solutions to problems that do not support its increasingly ideological preferences. Once one has captured the castle, political energy is directed mostly to its defense, not its maintenance or its relationship with the larger political unit.
This disposition of forces leads to ineffective opposition and produces nests of political corruption in which dominant politicians may rest undisturbed upon public nettles transformed in their imagination into beds of sweet smelling roses. To bring off this delusion in which arrogant politicians hope by sweet speech to “fool most of the people most of the time,” Abe Lincoln’s formulation, politicians must violate the spirit of our Constitution, which answers a no less important correlative question – Who shall decide what shall be done?
Both Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson sought to answer this second question by reverting to the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution.
The Declaration affirms the primacy of a “natural law” that cannot be expunged by politicians, however convincing, because the natural law has been imprinted within the very nature of mankind by the God of creation who will brook no interference by men who wish to rob mankind of the preternatural rights enshrined in both documents.
In his Second Inaugural Address, Lincoln said that both the North and the South “read the same Bible, and pray to the same God; and each invokes His aid against the other. It may seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just God’s assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men’s faces; but let us judge not that we be not judged. The prayers of both could not be answered; that of neither has been answered fully. The Almighty has His own purposes. ‘Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!’ If we shall suppose that American Slavery is one of those offences which, in the providence of God, must needs come, but which, having continued through His appointed time, He now wills to remove, and that He gives to both North and South, this terrible war, as the woe due to those by whom the offence came, shall we discern therein any departure from those divine attributes which the believers in a Living God always ascribe to Him?”
These words, approved by Frederick Douglass and heard by John Wilkes Booth, who was present at Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address, are carved on the North Wall of the Lincoln Memorial – by a woman sculptress as it happens. They erupt even today in the minds of patriots like a cleansing Godly wind storming from the Declaration of Independence.
Connecticut has adopted as its political template the destructive correlation of forces that obtain in California and New York City under socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the third person of the new socialist trinity being Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. These are forces of dissolution the United States has valiantly resisted for much of the 20th century long before the advent of the profoundly socialistic and anti-American Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) enthusiasm, now menacing much of Europe, the cradle of republican virtue. The present left-leaning Democrat Party in the northeast has forgotten everything and learned nothing. Any fool can learn from his own mistakes, but it takes genius to be able to learn from the mistakes of others.
