The plot thickens yet again in the curious case of Melissa Ramirez, the Stamford illegal alien charged in a fatal crash that killed Bridgeport Police Officer Cooper Whiteside and his girlfriend, Brittany Islami.
Governor Ned Lamont, Connecticut Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas, Danbury Police Chief Patrick Ridenhour, and State’s Attorney Stacey Haupt Miranda have all stated that there are two Melissa Ramirezes whose records were somehow “mixed up,” based on an allegedly incorrect driver’s license number in the original arrest warrant for the Stamford Ramirez. No one has explained how the two databases could have merged those records.
Subsequently, Secretary Thomas and Governor Lamont indicated that the New Britain Ramirez had been receiving death threats. They blamed the media for incorrectly reporting the story and jumping to an incorrect conclusion that the Stamford Ramirez — the criminal illegal — had voted multiple times in person in New Britain.
The Centinal reported on August 3 that Adam 12 from WTIC’s Reese on the Radio program filed a report with the New Britain Police Department (NBPD) requesting a welfare check on the Melissa Ramirez residing in New Britain who had been receiving death threats. He told police that Dan Haar, a journalist with Hearst’s CT Insider, had spoken directly with the New Britain Ramirez the previous week.
The incident report has since been updated to reflect that NBPD spoke with Haar, who “stated that while interviewing Melissa, she never made any comments regarding receiving death threats or being harassed.” Haar added that he was “unsure of where those claims came from” however he did reference comments made by the SOTS in his article.
NBPD was still unable to reach Sgt. Wakeman of the Danbury Police Department and left another voicemail.
“Officer Sadzak checked multiple addresses in the city of New Britain that Melissa may reside or have resided at which all yield negative results however, made contact with a cousin of Melissa who advised us of a phone number for Melissa and her potential whereabouts,” per the NBPD narrative.
NBPD states that it made contact with the New Britain Ramirez at the Big Sky Gym and positively identified her with her driver’s license.
Melissa told NBPD that “she had not been receiving any death threats nor is being harassed.” She stated that she had spoken to some media and told them she was being harassed by journalists who kept calling. Melissa told NBPD she feels safe.
NBPD informed Adam of the findings and advised him to contact Danbury Police with any further questions, as “Melissa has been verified to be safe and not in danger.”
Separately, misinformation about the Stamford Ramirez has been spreading on Facebook.
The Connecticut Department of Correction website states that the Stamford Ramirez is currently in custody at York Correctional Institution.
It is unclear why SOTS Thomas and Gov. Lamont both indicated that the New Britain Ramirez had been receiving threats. SOTS Thomas even made a video about the alleged misinformation.
Gov. Lamont told Reese on the Radio yesterday he had heard about the threats from people on his team, but was unable to speak to the nature of the threats. Lamont did not appreciate the "provocative" nature of Reese's questions and eventually indicated he had "enough" and suggested just checking the information.
Note that the Secretary of the State publicly asserted that her office would have immediately verified the alleged misinformation about the voting claims for the Stamford Ramirez. However, that has not been the Centinal’s experience in contacting the office of the SOTS. A phone inquiry made on Monday has yet to be returned on this high-profile case. Additional emails sent yesterday and this morning remain unanswered.
Accordingly, the Centinal has issued multiple public records requests to the Governor’s office, the Secretary of the State’s Office, New Britain Police, and Danbury Police in an attempt to clear up the confusion in this case, and to try to determine the origin of the false claim that the New Britain Ramirez had been receiving death threats.
