A 29-year-old Ohio man is dead after an illegal alien with a Connecticut drive-only license ran a stop sign, and Governor Ned Lamont’s office answered with a defense of those licenses.

Austin J. Karr Grimes of Fayette, Ohio, was killed Saturday when Washington G. Naula Ochoa of Perrysburg failed to yield at State Route 66 and County Road N in Fulton County. Grimes died at the scene. A woman and a toddler in his vehicle were injured. Ochoa was arrested and charged.

Lamont began with a perfunctory condolence — “My heart goes out to the family and friends… Drivers must be held accountable… especially when it causes a tragic loss of life” — then quickly pivoted to policy:

“States including Connecticut offer drive-only licenses to undocumented residents to help ensure all drivers are trained, tested, and know the rules of the road. This reduces hit-and-run accidents and brings more drivers into the insurance system who might otherwise be driving uninsured. Undocumented residents in many states already need to drive for work, school, and daily life; it’s safer for everyone when that driving happens within a regulated system.”

A man is dead because someone ran a stop sign. Lamont’s answer is that the system is working.

Notice what the statement does not say. It does not say illegal presence in the country is a problem. It does not say Connecticut should stop issuing state driving credentials to people the federal government says should not be here. It treats “undocumented residents” as a fixed fact of life and the state’s job as managing them more smoothly. They just have to get to work and school, after all.

That is the Lamont doctrine. Once someone is in the country illegally, the priority is to fold them into Connecticut’s systems: licenses, insurance, daily mobility. Public safety is defined as more paperwork for illegal aliens, not fewer people here unlawfully.

Drive-only licenses were sold as a safety measure. The pitch is always the same: they will be tested, they will be insured, they will not flee the scene. A stop-sign violation that kills a father in Ohio then becomes the occasion to repeat the pitch.

Connecticut families are told this makes the roads safer. It does not.

Grimes’ family did not need a seminar on Connecticut’s dangerous policies. They needed a governor who could say a deadly traffic violation is unacceptable without immediately defending the Democrats’ political project that put more unvetted drivers on the road.

Lamont could not manage that. His first public instinct was to protect the policy. That tells you what the policy is for.

Meanwhile, Sen. Bernie Moreno demanded answers to four questions from Lamont:

• How many illegal aliens currently hold Connecticut drive-only licenses?
• How many illegal aliens with drive-only licenses have committed crimes?
• How many illegal aliens with drive-only licenses have registered to vote or actually voted?
• How much has the program to give drivers licenses to illegal aliens cost Connecticut taxpayers?

Based on Lamont’s initial statement, full cooperation with Moreno looks unlikely.
