Sen. Chris Murphy appeared today on The Revolutionaries Podcast to discuss “Trump, Democracy, and the Future of America.” He opened by questioning the show’s “provocative title,” then laid out a vision that rejects returning to the pre-Trump status quo.

Murphy argued the country is stuck with a system that increasingly favored the “billionaire class with special treatment and inside deals” while “everybody else got screwed.” He described a national “spiritual crisis” of loneliness, disconnection, and powerlessness driven by an obsession with individual achievement and phones. The goal, he said, is not restoration but something “bigger and different”—an economy where “everybody has power” and people are no longer isolated.

The interview turned to the prospect of Democrat majorities in the House and Senate. An interviewer noted that even then, conviction and removal of Trump would be unlikely. Murphy responded that Trump “has committed offenses in his second term that make the things he was impeached for look like child’s play.” He called the current alleged corruption “nuclear level” compared with the first term and said he cares about “doing the right thing” by investigating “all of his crimes” and how the White House is allegedly used for personal enrichment. Murphy did not identify any actual crimes. He appeared to relish the prospect of subpoenas and predicted jail time for some in Trump world, while conceding none would come in the next two years because “Trump controls the judiciary” and the DOJ “doesn’t care about the law.” One interviewer called Murphy's vision “heartening.”

As a reminder Trump was first impeached in December 2019 on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress stemming from a call with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy in which he sought announcements of investigations involving Joe Biden and 2016 election interference claims. The Senate acquitted him in February 2020. He was impeached a second time in January 2021 on a single article of incitement of insurrection related to the January 6 Capitol events; the Senate again acquitted him after he left office.

Murphy also criticized Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth as “dangerous,” “woefully unprepared,” and more focused on “male grooming” than American safety, called the Iran conflict a “disaster” and “illegal,” and predicted Trump would start a major war with Iran after the election, a move he later called "insane."

On affordability, Murphy blamed Connecticut housing costs on “plan scarcity,” food prices on monopolies, and high drug costs on lobbyist pressure and corruption. He pushed a $25 minimum wage that would “trim” billionaire earnings as part of the solution. On college costs, he criticized an “arms race” of high-end dorms and fancy food, favoring shorter degrees, certifications, and online options. He called for breaking up Meta (“no company should own Facebook and Instagram”) and Paramount-Skydance (CBS and CNN), saying he would put such bills on Trump’s desk to force him to defend “corporate oligarchies” as opposed to Democrats who would protect "workers."

Asked about redesigning one part of democracy, Murphy said he would overturn Citizens United. That 2010 Supreme Court decision held that independent political expenditures by corporations and unions are protected speech under the First Amendment, striking down certain bans while leaving direct contribution limits and disclosure rules intact. It did not legalize unlimited direct contributions to candidates.

Murphy said he is not currently thinking about a presidential run and remains focused on ensuring a “free and fair” election, after which he will decide. He said he “loves” representing Connecticut. But in reality, Murphy has spent significant time and money backing progressive candidates in other states, including Abdul El-Sayed and Angie Nixon. He is also still battling a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome.
