U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy experienced a stroke on Saturday and remains hospitalized, according to a statement from his office.

Murphy, 53, began experiencing numbness in his arm while attending his son’s hockey game on Halloween. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors determined he had suffered a stroke. He was later transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for further monitoring.

“The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery,” Chief of Staff Allison Herwitt said in a statement released Sunday.

In the weeks leading up to the stroke, Murphy had maintained a heavy campaign schedule on behalf of progressive candidates, with recent stops in Michigan for Abdul El-Sayed, Minnesota for Peggy Flanagan, and Florida for Angie Nixon, and appeared on podcasts like the Revolutionaries. He had been scheduled to attend additional events in New Hampshire on Sunday before the medical episode.

Murphy has served in the Senate since 2013. This is a developing story.
