Note this article was updated at 10:45am on Nov. 3 to reflect a short statement from FBI New Haven.
On the eve of the midterms, the official FBI New Haven X account (@FBINewHaven) posted this on November 2:
Election Day is TODAY, Tuesday, November 3, 2026 — the date fixed by federal law for more than a century. The post stayed up for many hours, racked up tens of thousands of views, drew Community Notes correcting the date, and was widely mocked before the account quietly deleted it.
This is the same FBI New Haven office that routinely issues statements about protecting election integrity and investigating threats. Instead, it put out the exact kind of false information about the date of the election that the Bureau itself treats as voter suppression when done by others.
The post was real. It came from the verified official account. It was not a parody or a hack. And the fact that it was left up for hours before being scrubbed only makes the optics worse — especially in a state where election integrity concerns (same-day registration spikes, voter-roll issues, and resistance to federal monitors) have already been documented.
Voters heading to the polls today didn’t need the FBI New Haven office to tell them the wrong day. They needed competence. They got a deleted tweet instead.
The Centinal contacted FBI New Haven for a statement. Public Affairs said, "the only thing we can say is the post was taken down," and then directed us to the national FBI press office for any further comment. We reached out for a comment. Stay tuned.
