After two days of jury deliberation, a jury acquitted Connecticut State Trooper Brian North. North was charged with manslaughter for shooting and killing Mubarake Soulemane in 2020 after a high-speed chase.
Soulemane was driving in a stolen vehicle on I-95 which he car jacked from a Lyft driver in Norwalk.
When the car came to a stop, after being boxed in, one West Haven officer smashed out the passenger side window of the stolen car. Soulemane pulled out a knife that threatened the lives of two officers and resulted in North’s use of his service weapon after Soulemane refused to put down the knife.
This encounter was captured on body cam and dash footage. A lot of attention was paid to judging his actions frame by frame when North had seconds.
The jury reached an outcome that at least demonstrates some return to law and order and an understanding of the challenges faced by our police and first responders. While qualified immunity has been removed from police officers across the country, this verdict represents that North received a fair trial. While there are bad actors in any profession, those are usually the exception.
A special thanks goes out to Cathy Walsh and the Blue Lives Matter Connecticut Group on Facebook with over 800 members. In the rallies held at the Milford courthouse over the past few years and with Cathy’s daily persistence, the focus was for a fair trial for Trooper North in an era where so many other law enforcement officers are not being given the due process they deserve. Cathy posted the following on the Facebook page. I was proud to be there for several of the rallies since this process began several years ago and Stand with Trooper North.
