The Stamford "Hands Off" rally was originally set to start at Veterans Memorial Park in downtown Stamford, but a couple days before the event, Indivisible sent out an urgent message indicating that attendance had "exceeded the capacity for Veterans Park" so the protest had been moved.
Shortly after the announcement spread on social media, though, a Connecticut "MAGA mom" posted a letter claiming the real reason the protest was moved was due to a complaint by 13 veterans who objected to the use of Veterans Park for a protest, and recommended Mill River Park instead.
As soon as we set foot in Mill River Park, we were greeted by a lovely gal from Indivisible who had spent a bunch of time creating her own lyrics to "We Will Rock You" by Queen.
She didn't want to take any individual credit for the, um, clever adaption, but wanted to make sure Indivisible Stamford got all the credit.
Then we encountered the "sign lady" standing at the corner of the park near the Stamford Democrats sign, greeting people as they arrived, offering free signs -- most of which were provided by the national Indivisible organization, but a number were handmade at the "poster party" that took place at the Government Center the day before the protest.
The "sign lady" was later identified as a long-time Indivisible member from Stamford.
We saw a number of elected officials, including State Reps. Matt Blumenthal and Hector Arzeno, State Senator Ceci Maher, Secretary of State Stephanie Thomas, Attorney General William Tong, and members of local Stamford boards.
Blumenthal seemed to have some trouble with his math, though, suggesting that 5,000 people showed up in Stamford when it was probably more like 1,000 - 2,000 -- still a good showing for sure, but not nearly as big as democrats want you to believe.
A couple of the people in our group decided to chat with AG Tong before he climbed aboard a pick-up truck being used as a makeshift stage to deliver his unhinged speech.
One person leaned in to get a selfie with Tong, and then whispered into his ear, "why do you care more about illegals than legitimate citizens?" He immediately pulled back and turned around in absolute disgust, only to be confronted moments later by the other person who also pushed him on immigration.
This was Tong's second rally of the day -- he was scheduled to appear at four rallies across the state on Saturday -- and he seemed to think nothing of using his office to advertise his protest appearances... which makes us wonder exactly how much taxpayer money has been used to support Tong's personal activism efforts.
Much like the crowd in Greenwich, the Stamford crowd had A LOT of baby boomers in attendance, but also good union representation with members even sporting union-branded rain ponchos.
Then it was showtime, kicked off by Michelle Abt from Indivisible Stamford who offered scripted remarks that sounded very similar to what we heard earlier in Greenwich. The real party started when Tong climbed aboard the pick up truck as the speakers blasted "Enter Sandman" by Metallica, all while the crowd acted as if Tong was some kind of rock god.
By the way, Enter Sandman was originally about "destroy[ing] the perfect family; a huge horrible secret in a family and had references to crib death," making it a rather interesting choice for Tong's entrance.
By now his speech was well-rehearsed and similar to what he delivered in Greenwich, albeit a bit more amped up considering Tong lives in Stamford.
Tong was the only speaker, so after he finished up, people were split into two groups -- the group taking the short walk just a few blocks straight down Washington Boulevard to the WWE headquarters...
And the much larger group that marched through the city before heading to the WWE headquarters.
We chatted with a number of protesters in Stamford, and as we experienced at other leftist protests, most people couldn't really articulate any facts to support their positions, but they sure knew how to repeat the slogans that were prepared for them in advance by Indivisible and the other groups behind these protests.
One thing we noticed in Stamford that we didn't see in Greenwich, however, was the call to "86" President Trump -- that's slang for "eliminate someone" of course.
And the folks carrying those "86-47" signs didn't view them as a call to violence or anything, just what needs to be done to "save their democracy."
The protestors eventually made their way in front of the WWE building by the end of the march, and finally had an opportunity to join together for that adaption of "We Will Rock You" in what was a very disorganized and weak rendition.
On the way out, we met this young gal wearing an "equality ≠ equity" shirt and couldn't help but think she didn't get the irony of her sign.
We'll leave you with a handful of photos from the protest so you can enjoy "what democracy looked like" to the Stamford "Hands Off" crowd.
And, yes, we are well aware of the fact that the Stamford Senior Center sits right between Mill River Park and the WWE Headquarters!
Lmao- Does Metallica know?🤣😂
Is this a “Revenge of the Nerds” remake?🤭
