Danbury Superior Court granted a continuance Monday in the case of illegal alien Melissa Esperanza Ramirez-Romero, charged in the July 13 crash that killed off-duty Bridgeport Police Officer Cooper Whiteside and Brittany Islami.
Ramirez, 27, of Stamford, did not appear in person. There was no pool reporter, so no video or photographs are available. The hearing lasted barely five minutes. Her attorney, Dan Thibodeau, appeared and spoke with court staff about her not being transported. No Bridgeport police officers were present. Ramirez’s family was not there. The courthouse was unusually quiet, consistent with the chill left by last week’s immigration enforcement operations in the area.
Thibodeau requested a continuance, saying he had not received discovery documents. The prosecutor indicated that a large package—including videos and other materials—is still being compiled by the State’s Attorney. The prosecution agreed to the delay. The next court date is October 5.
The $300,000 bond remains in place. A Department of Homeland Security immigration detainer is still in effect, and Ramirez remains in custody. It is not clear whether she will appear in person in October.
Ramirez faces two counts of second-degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle, operating under the influence, traveling unreasonably fast, and failure to drive in the proper lane. Prosecutors have previously indicated a possible additional charge of operating without a license. She has pleaded not guilty. The case stems from a head-on collision on Sugar Hollow Road in Danbury around 2:45 a.m. on July 13. Toxicological results cited in court records showed a blood-alcohol content of 0.14, nearly twice the legal limit, and a positive test for cannabis. ICE lodged a detainer on July 26, describing her as a criminal illegal alien facing vehicular manslaughter and DUI charges.
