Derby Alderman Gino DiGiovanni Jr. beat incumbent, Mayor Rich Dziekan, and narrowly won the Republican primary yesterday by just 10 votes.

An automatic recount was triggered in light of the close race (202 to 192). It's scheduled to take place on Friday, September 15th.

“It feels good that it paid off today. Finally Derby wants to make a change in the city’s future,” DiGiovanni said.

Dziekan, who did not immediately concede, will apparently still appear on the ballot in November as a write-in candidate.

This leaves Republicans wondering whether having two Republicans on the ticket will result in a split vote, paving the way for a Democrat win in November.
