COVID is far from the first time our government agencies have been acting as mad scientists in taxpayer-funded bioresearch laboratories experimenting with dangerous pathogens. In the 1970’s Army researchers were experimenting with pathogens at the Plum Island Animal Disease Center in Long Island Sound, when inadequate filtration maintenance resulted in an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) that led to the emergency killing and burning of more than 72,000 pounds of live cows, sheep, goats and other animals in just 48 hours. There was a massive cover-up at the time of the destruction of these animals and the disease outbreak.
Plum Island is the only location in the United States where research on the foot and mouth virus was legally permitted. While the virus is not fatal to humans, people who have come in contact with it can readily transmit it to animals, who become seriously debilitated and suffer lameness, fever, and painful vesicular lesions on the tongue, feet, snout, and teats. Although FMD does not result in high mortality in adult animals, the disease has debilitating effects, including weight loss, decrease in milk production, and loss of muscle strength and lamenss, resulting in a loss in productivity for a considerable time. Mortality, however, can be high in young animals, where the virus can affect the heart. In addition, cattle, sheep, and goats can become carriers, and cattle can harbor virus for up to 2 to 3 years. Contaminated food, water and soil can also spread the disease.
Furthermore, worldwide concern about terrorist attacks in the United States and elsewhere has raised the possibility that terrorist organizations or rogue states might target the $100 billion/year U.S. livestock industry by employing the etiologic agent of FMD to cause destruction of our food supply since it is such a highly contagious disease easily spread among animals.
FMD is a disease of cloven-hoofed domestic livestock (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs) and more than 70 species of wild animals, including deer. Some people believe foot-and-mouth disease may have been the fifth plague that struck the Egyptians and killed their cattle in Exodus 9: 1-7 (see below). But it was not until 1514 that the first written description of FMD was recorded in Italy in cattle. Then in 1897, Loeffler and Frosch demonstrated that a filterable agent caused FMD. This was the first time that a disease of animals was shown to be caused by a filterable agent, and this demonstration ushered in the era of virology. Outbreaks have occurred in every livestock-containing region of the world with the exception of New Zealand, and the disease is currently enzootic in all continents except Australia and North America.
What does this island have to do with Lyme disease? It was in that same decade that a mysterious new disease labeled Lyme disease, named after the location where if first appeared: Lyme, Connecticut. What’s interesting is that Lyme, Connecticut is about 17 miles due north across the Long Island Sound from Plum Island. The viruses can easily infect animals that in turn infect ticks that feed on the blood of an FMD-infected animal such as deer. Deer are prevalent throught the islands of Long Island and Block Island Sounds. Deer are also excellent swimmers and could easily swim across hese waters spreading the ticks to other animals, and then ticks picked up by humans to cause Lyme disease. This scenario is all too familiar, repeated often throughout our recent history.
Wuhan Institute of Virology isn’t the first time or place that a pathogen has escaped research labs—accidentally or deliberately—to then cause pain and suffering to mankind. The book Lab 257 expresses a well-researched account of the shenanigans and mishaps at the Plum Island Animal Disease Center. This book also highlights whistle blower Merlon Wiggin who documented the lab’s insufficient filter maintenance among many other discrepancies. In consistent whistle blower fashion, Merlon was persecuted and eventually removed from Plum Island as the Chief Engineer. This story is just like today’s military whistle blowers trying to bring forth the Defense Medical Epidemiological Data (DMED) that shows the Covid-shot damage. This story echoes the sheer pride, arrogance and greed of our “mad scientists” that continue to carry out dangerous experiments without adequate safeguards or concern for potential damage to human and animal life.
