Attorney General William Tong has a new litmus test for Connecticut Republicans—actually, he's going to stop calling them Republicans.

Instead, he is demanding that Republican candidates stand up and declare, on camera if possible, whether they are "Donald Trump's acolytes" and "MAGA." Yes or no. Own it or recant it. That is the price of admission to being treated as a legitimate opponent instead of a threat to democracy.

"Do you stand with Donald Trump or do you stand with us?" Tong demanded. "If you stand with him now, you are disqualified from serving in this state."

Then Tong complained about the Trump administration eliminating taxpayer-funded handouts like SNAP to illegal aliens. He also said Republicans should be disqualified if they think it's okay for ICE to conduct operations in the state.

This is the same official who has spent two years telling Connecticut GOP leaders they must publicly denounce Trump-inspired “hate,” who treats every Republican who will not perform the ritual as complicit, and who has turned 60-plus lawsuits against the administration into the aggressive centerpiece of his reelection campaign against Republican candidate John Bolton.

The purity test Tong wants on the record is purely tribal: Are you one of us, or are you one of them?

Nearly 42% of Connecticut voters picked Trump. Local voters do not need their attorney general weaponizing an ideological gatekeeping test before a Republican candidate is allowed to speak about the high cost of living in the state.

Shame on the Republicans who fall directly into this trap. Your weakness and inability to articulate clear conservative strengths will secure your own downfall this November.
