On Tuesday morning, July 29th, Greater Danbury Area Unites for Immigrants ("GDA") posted a "community alert" on Facebook, warning that a "confirmed ICE vehicle" was spotted in Danbury at 10:22am.

Then a leader of the group apparently jumped into action.

According to the City of Danbury Police Department, a Bethel woman later identified as Cynthia Behrens followed a federal agent through the city in an "unsafe manner." She reportedly "ran through three red lights while attempting to follow the agent's vehicle and at one point tailgated the vehicle in a reckless manner."

Once stopped by police, Behrens failed to comply with several requests, wasting the officer's time for nearly 30 minutes until the Danbury Fire Department arrived and forced entry into her vehicle.

She was taken into custody without further incident and no injuries were reported.

GDA issued a statement after the arrest, albeit with a different take on what happened.

The group alleged a leader was "targeted and arrested by police while peacefully enacting their first amendment rights and protecting our immigrant community."

"Today's events mark a turning point in the state of Connecticut. What we saw today should give all of us pause - fascism is here in Connecticut. We've seen legal observers arrested elsewhere in the country. These actions are meant to still fear in us, to paralyze us, to divide us," the statement continued.

The group condemned Danbury Police Department's actions, and further complained about "reports of people being kidnapped in our community by ICE today."

It's worth mentioning that Cynthia Behrens aka "Cyndie McGuire" isn't just any old activist.

According to Connecticut Secretary of State records, Cyndie was elected and served as an alternate for the Bethel Zoning Board of Appeals in 2017; she ran for a full seat and failed to win the seat in 2019, but continued to serve as an alternate until 2021.

She was cross-endorsed by the Democrat Party and the Working Families Party -- the same party that asked candidates about their feelings on things like "non-citizen voting in their local elections" and "expanding Husky insurance to ALL illegals" in order to obtain an endorsement in 2024.

Coincidentally, just three days ago, Cyndie advertised an Indivisible meeting described as an "intimate gathering to enable deeper discussions and questions on immigrants rights" and warned folks that "never again is NOW!"

Cyndie has posted about a lot of protests since President Donald Trump has taken office -- 22 consecutive protests to be exact, including this week's "gun violence prevention" protest.

While the overall theme is "Defending Democracy", each week's protest mixes it up a bit, plus national "branded" protests like No Kings, Hands Off, May Day, and Good Trouble Lives On are also on the list.

Cyndie's Bethel Rallies web page advertised a June 17th GDA press conference in Danbury with the intention of getting "ICE out" of the city.

Since GDA is not yet set up to take in donations, the folks at The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Danbury will be acting as their fiscal sponsor.

Speaking of sponsors... professionally printed posters were spotted at the July 12th protest that read "Crushed ICE Melts Faster."

On June 7, 2025, Cyndie's protest was all about, you guessed it, protecting immigrants.

Outside of the rallies, Cyndie seems to enjoy "fighting the gestapo" with her GDA pals.

Plus she really hates the "concentration camp" otherwise known as "Alligator Alcatraz" -- a place she apparently visited, according to her Facebook page.

And she seems to have a special interest in exposing federal agents.

She even won the Bethel Democratic Town Committee's Clifford J. Hurgin Democrat of the Year Award in 2019.

She's the second Democrat from Bethel to get arrested in as many days.
