The Easton Democratic Town Committee recently issued a lengthy statement condemning a yard sign displayed near Samuel Staples Elementary School that reads “For the Love of God Anyone But a Democrat.” Calling the sign hostile, divisive, and a poor example for children, they invited local Republicans to join them in publicly denouncing it to affirm a shared commitment to “civility and mutual respect.”

To say this post is tone-deaf would be a massive understatement. Political signs expressing strong opposition to a rival party are completely commonplace in Connecticut towns during election season. Treating this standard expression of partisan frustration as a uniquely toxic community crisis, while remaining completely silent on the vitriol coming from their own side, is a masterclass in selective outrage.

While the Easton Democrats wring their hands over a basic anti-Democrat lawn sign, they look the other way when top leaders in their own party completely throw "civility" out the window. Just this week, video surfaced of Democrat Governor Ned Lamont and local state Senate incumbent Martha Marx at a party gathering, comfortably laughing and calling Republican candidate Lee Elci an "asshole" and an "idiot." If Easton Democrats are truly deeply concerned about the "standards of conduct" set by political leadership, where is the public condemnation of the Governor's vulgarity?

Furthermore, the Easton Democrats' sudden plea to end "personal attacks and hostility" rings entirely hollow when looking at their own social media page. Weeks before their lecture on kindness, the committee eagerly posted a mean-spirited graphic targeting local Republican candidate Amybeth LaRoche, childishly labeling her "Lyin' Laroche"—even though LaRoche wasn't lying.

The truth is the Easton Democrats want to establish a community standard where criticizing the Democrat Party is a danger to children, but directly name-calling local candidates on Facebook is considered perfectly acceptable civic discourse.

This partisan double standard extends directly to Easton’s own representation. State Representative Anne Hughes famously showed her brand of dismissive contempt for constituents during a Tax Day press conference, where she was caught on a hot mic laughing and saying, "tax my people—they won't even notice."

But the hypocrisy reaches its peak on their official Facebook page, which functions as the public voice for Easton Democrats. On Independence Day 2025, rather than celebrating unity, the Easton Democrats proudly promoted an anti-Trump protest in town. Rep. Anne Hughes spent America's birthday standing on the side of the road clutching a protest sign, while the Easton Democrats posted images of the event to their followers.

Even worse, the Easton Democrats explicitly joined the progressive "86-47" club by proudly posting a photo of their very own Democrat Registrar of Voters, David Smith, smiling alongside a sign bearing that exact polarizing, confrontational message.

When combined with the state's broader progressive activist network—where Connecticut Democrats regularly march alongside signs calling local voters fascists, Nazis, and threats to democracy—the double standard becomes undeniable. Local Democratic organizations consistently treat aggressive, highly polarizing rhetoric and personal targeting from their own party members as legitimate civic engagement.

Yet, they treat a single, common anti-Democrat lawn sign near a school as a community emergency. Pretending that only one side’s signs cross the line is a cynical political tactic. If the Easton Democrats want to lead a real conversation about civility, they should start by looking in the mirror.
