For the second time in Connecticut history, the transgender pride flag was raised over the Capitol in Hartford to mark Trans Day of Visibility (TDOV), which takes place annually on March 31st.
“We are so proud of this beautiful, vibrant community,” Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz said at the flag raising. “Some people think that flag raisings are not important, and I would respectfully and strongly disagree.”
Bysiewicz called the trans flag “an important symbol" for the state, and said, “by raising this flag, the governor and I want everyone in our state to know: We see you, we respect you, and we will keep fighting for you.”
But not everyone from the LGBTQ+ community supported the flag raising or wants this attention focused on their lives, and would prefer that politicians stop pandering to the “trans community”.
Like Christine Rebstock, who identifies as transsexual (not transgender) and attended the event to denounce it. "I believe only government flags should be displayed on government property."
Rebstock said that the trans flag raising "brings unwanted negativity" and then said, "The Hartford Courant misquoted me and didn’t put me in a positive light. I want to be left alone and quietly live me life."
The Hartford flag raising took place on Thursday, just a day before Biden's proclamation about TDOV on Good Friday, which upset many Christians, including Rebstock.
The proclamation, which features an Easter Bunny and eggs in front of the White House seal, speaks to the "extraordinary courage and contributions of transgender Americans" and then goes on to tout Biden's 'achievements' on trans civil rights before attacking those opposed to normalizing transgenderism.
"But extremists are proposing hundreds of hateful laws that target and terrify transgender kids and their families — silencing teachers; banning books; and even threatening parents, doctors, and nurses with prison for helping parents get care for their children," says Biden's proclamation which goes on to allege there is an "epidemic of violence against transgender women and girls"... and that it's worse for "trans people of color", not missing the chance to play identity politics.
This year, TDOV coincides with Easter Sunday, prompting many on the Christian right, including Donald Trump, to call Biden's proclamation "blasphemous" and just another example in the Biden Administration's "years-long assault on the Christian faith."
Biden's White House even prohibited children from submitting religious egg designs for their Easter Art Event, further upsetting many Christians.
Noted academic and author James Lindsay said Biden's proclamation "isn't just an insult to the Christian faith" but that "it's a deliberate provocation against Christians" and reminded that Biden has been framing Christian nationalism as one of the most dangerous threats to "democracy" in the world.
Lindsay asserted that this provocation is meant to drag Christians into some kind of visible reaction that the Biden Regime would then use to further clamp down on Christian nationalism.
Biden's proclamations are certainly welcome by Connecticut Democrats who have been intent on enshrining transgender civil rights into the State Constitution.
In fact, Senate Joint Resolution No. 4, which was proposed in the current legislative session, would actually create a right to gender transitions, even for minors, and could spell the end of women-only sports in the state. The resolution was just approved by the GAE Committee last week.
Transgender civil rights are also spelled out by the Connecticut State Department of Education ("CSDE") in recently updated guidance for 2024. It cites key 'obligations' for schools, like using preferred pronouns. For example, if a school routinely honors certain students' requests to be called by a particular name but refuses others because the requested name and pronouns don't match the student’s sex at birth, the refusal could be found to constitute gender-based discrimination.
If the refusal to honor a trans student’s new name and pronouns is deemed to be so "severe, pervasive, and objectively offensive that it deprived a student of equal access to educational opportunities and benefits, it could be regarded as hostile environment sex harassment under Title IX" in Connecticut. Further, any conduct that "adversely, and foreseeably, affects a student’s emotional well-being" could possibly constitute grounds for common law claims of negligent or intentional infliction of emotional distress.
Keeping secrets from parents isn't necessarily prohibited, so long as the school's counsel agrees there's a "good-faith concern" that telling a parent or guardian their child is trans could threaten the child's "physical or emotional health".
Students must be allowed to play sports and access restrooms and locker rooms that correspond to their gender identity. Schools can't compel trans students to use individual-user facilities when other students are not required to do so, either.
Connecticut schools districts are embracing the updated trans guidance, too, including Avon Public Schools which just detailed on March 11, 2024, exactly what the new CSDE trans guidance means for the district.
This intense focus on trans visibility coincides with the release of whistleblower files from the worldwide transgender health organization, WPATH. The files provide clear evidence that doctors and therapists are aware they are offering minors life-changing treatments they cannot fully understand. WPATH members know that puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and trans surgeries will cause infertility and other complications, including cancer and pelvic floor dysfunction. Yet WPATH members like Christy Olezeski, PhD, Director and co-founder of the Yale Pediatric Gender Program, promote dangerous "gender-affirming" care anyway.
Many people are confused by the sudden focus on transgenderism seemingly everywhere in society and pray for a return to the olden days, like when Holy Week was marked by "crosses" on the skyscrapers on New York City. But those days seem to be long gone, and instead NY Governor Hochul dictated that 13 state landmarks light up for TDOV on Easter Sunday instead.
