Mentions of the Nazi past of New Canaan architect Philip Johnson (1906-2005) continue in pop culture. Johnson came in at #8 on a list of top 10 Nazi sympathizers in a high-traffic WatchMojo.com video released three days ago. As of today the video has already been viewed over 130,000 times.
Bizarrely, today's Connecticut government does not seem bothered by Philip Johnson's Nazi past, or is incompetently unaware of it. Both positions would be right on CT Dem brand: His Glass House is currently spotlighted on the state's tourism website.
Their marketing theme is "Bold. Famous. Legendary". But arguably "Repulsive. Vacuous. Immoral" may be more fitting.
The WatchMojo video shows a clip of the scandal of Johnson's Nazi past in relation to his Minneapolis design for the city's IDS Center skyscraper, reported by Fox 9 / KMSP TV news.
The overview report says, "Philip Johnson served as head of architecture [department] at the Museum of Modern Art — and designed 550 Madison and the Glass House in Connecticut. And this guy was a HUGE Nazi sympathizer. He admired Hitler, personally attended Nazi rallies in Germany, and wrote for fascist, anti-semitic publications like Social Justice."

A clip of book author Marc Wortman, who resides in Connecticut, is then shown. He wrote 1941: Fighting the Shadow War: A Divided America in a World at War (2016), with a focus on Philip Johnson in chapter two. In Rachel Maddow' Prequel: An American Fight Against Fascism (2023), she positioned Johnson as the lead Nazi in her book's first chapter.
Also in the top 10 shortlist of Nazi sympathizers are: at #10 former King Edward and Wallis Simpson, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor; at #6 is aviator Charles Lindbergh, with fashion icon Coco Chanel coming in at #3; and at #1 is Henry Ford of the Ford Motor Company.
The Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Philip Johnson, and Henry Ford, in relation to an announced Miller Company of Meriden deal, before and after he received an award from Hitler, are spotlighted in the recent Connecticut Centinal six-article series: “Johnson & Tremaine Associates, Ridgefield’s Martha Dodd Featured In Hitler’s Aristocrats (2023)”.
Further, V. Mitch McEwen of the Johnson Study Group and in the Princeton University architecture department has a book coming out this fall: she interprets Johnson's famed Glass House in relation to… Auschwitz.
