Chris Murphy just completed his annual "Walk Across Connecticut" publicity stunt on September 4 with a "celebration" of himself at Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport, CT.
For security reasons, Murphy’s walking route and events — including press releases and invitations — don’t come out until the day before. Otherwise, people might find out how staged the stunt really is. Or they might show up to ask him tough questions instead of the softballs he normally has lined up.
At a March 2025 Town Hall, Murphy refused to answer our question about his infamous statement that the people he cares about most are "undocumented." He was standing on stage in a crowded high school auditorium in Stamford, and just walked away to take the next question without skipping a beat.
A couple of months later, at his “End of Walk” celebration in Norwalk, he partially answered our question about illegal immigrants. He also said that if you point out that breaking federal immigration law is a crime, as we did, you are spreading a “dangerous racist mythology” that we have something to fear from “people who speak a different language or are of a different ethnicity” — and that such fear is “rooted in a really dark place.”
When the invitation arrived for this year’s End of Walk celebration at the zoo, it was impossible to refuse. This time the question that deserved an answer was about illegal aliens with Connecticut driver’s licenses who cause deadly car accidents, killing American citizens like Bridgeport Police Officer Cooper Whiteside and his girlfriend, Brittany Islami.
It feels like the wheels of justice in the case are intentionally grinding slow, especially after a drivers license number on the official police report matched a drivers license number on an active voter registration card in New Britain. The Secretary of the State eventually blamed police for making a mistake, then used the story for a campaign fundraiser. The court just granted a continuance in the case until October, but we'd be willing to wager that nothing will happen until after midterms.
There was another case highlighted last week by Sen. Bernie Moreno of Ohio, in which an illegal alien with a Connecticut drive-only license blew through a stop sign and killed an Ohio citizen.
We also wanted to know why Chris Murphy keeps saying illegal aliens commit crimes at a lower rate than citizens when, by definition, illegal aliens have already broken federal immigration law.
You know what Murphy did when the question came up?
He immediately pivoted to guns — when the question had nothing to do with guns. It was about illegal aliens with Connecticut driver’s licenses causing deadly crashes. He also refused to distinguish between legal and illegal immigration. The audience clapped harder and cheered louder for that answer than for anything else he said at the zoo.
After the last question, he invited people to come up and speak with him personally. We told him about Cooper Whiteside and Brittany Islami. We told him about the Ohio man who was killed. He became very defensive, pretended he knew nothing about these deaths, and declined, when asked, to help ensure justice for their families.
What happened next was even more special: angry Democrats went on the attack, blaming us for every grievance they had against the “evil orange man.” We were lectured, pointed at, and recorded for having a different view.
Most special of all was the older woman who lectured us about the “rage” and “anger” embedded in that “ugly” question. She said no one will take us seriously using language like that. If we wanted anyone to care about our issue, she said, we first needed to acknowledge the humanity and personhood of every individual and recognize that “no human is illegal.”
She actually advised us to start saying “person who is involved with the justice system” instead of “criminal illegal alien cop killer,” because it sounds less angry. She was more outraged over our choice of words than over the fact that American citizens were killed by a person who should never have been in the country in the first place.
By the way, the last question Murphy took was from a woman who wanted free electricity and Wi-Fi to go along with affordable housing. But don’t worry: Murphy said that’s not socialism, just a “platform of shared services” — no different, he said, from public schools, public fire protection, and public police protection. “You all love that,” he added.
“None of us would give back the fact that we get public fire protection for free,” Murphy asserted. “So why not have a conversation about a handful of other things that we could all share and that we could socialize the cost of across the entire country … and because we have a progressive tax system, the rich would end up paying more for it.”
