Moms For Liberty has been in the eye of the storm ever since the National School Board Association (NSBA) wrote a letter to the Department of Justice in 2021 that labeled any parent standing up for their children’s rights as a potential “domestic terrorist”. NSBA immediately retracted the statement after intense backlash.

Once again, Moms For Liberty is in the spotlight, this time thanks to the SPLC (Southern Poverty Law Center) for adding Moms For Liberty, along with other parental rights organizations, to its infamous HateMap, now designating them as Extremist Groups.

As the Moms For Liberty Hartford County Chapter President, I found this designation both offensive and intolerant for multiple reasons. First, since when did parental rights become a dirty word? Standing up for your OWN child is now deemed Hate? As a mom, that’s highly offensive and I can imagine other parents and family members feel the same!

Second, our chapter does not seek to ban or burn books. This is a false narrative that obscures the real issue, which is whether the content is developmentally appropriate. All we are asking is for books to be placed in the library according to age-appropriateness. After all, would you give a 6-year-old child a an assignment to read Homer, Shakespeare or even JD Salinger? Of course not, because they are not age-appropriate books for 6-year-olds.

In reality, those opposed to Moms For Liberty are the actual book banners, having already banned Dr. Seuss books, To Kill A Mockingbird, Huckleberry Finn, and even people like Isaac Newton??! The man who defined the law of physics and gravity.

Third, we are not homophobic or nor do we hate transgenders. In fact, we have members who are part of the LGBTQ community. Here’s the difference however... IF you are an adult, you have every right to live your life according to how you see fit. That’s the very definition of Liberty. We have no care what goes on between two consenting adults behind closed doors. However, to recommend puberty blockers to young children, or have them undergo sex mutilation surgery (e.g., mastectomy, hysterectomy, surgically removing male genitals) is appalling and yes, horrific. Children as young as 10 years old simply cannot understand the lifetime ramifications of these medical procedures. This is child abuse, especially considering a child’s body is still growing. If a child is not old enough to drive a car, how can they be old enough to comprehend the irreversible impact of puberty blocking drugs and/or surgery?

What does Moms For Liberty - Hartford County stand for?

Our chapter’s motto is to unify, educate, and empower parents, grandparents, and people living in a community about parental rights. This is done through building a bridge between the parent/ guardian and the school district, and by including your child’s teacher. As parents, can we get 100% of our wants? No, and that should not be the goal, because ten different parents may want ten different things, so satisfying everybody won’t likely be possible. The same goes for the school district. So, let's put forth the top requirements we need as parents or guardians.

Remember, we are the parents, we are the ones who were in the room when our child was born, then and there, making a promise to shelter, feed and clothe them, and to protect them. As parents, we teach our child ethics and morals, NOT the government. School plays an essential role in educating our children and ensuring they get the best tools required to move up the ladder in school, and through college. So make curriculum transparent, keep open lines of communication with parents, and give parents an option to have their child opt out of a course or survey without retribution to the child. Respect goes both ways and so does trust.

To all the parents, no matter what your politics are, no matter what skin color you are, no matter what is your religion, this is the time to make your voice heard. Why? Because these children, our children, are the future of our nation. Just as our beloved country needs them, they need this country too. They are its future innovators, scientists, artists, and leaders. If their education fails, then this nation fails.

    So, fight for them!

Make your voice heard in the school board elections, in your local elections, in your state elections and your national elections. Stand up for your children. They are watching us more than ever, because they need us NOW.

    Thank you for your time.
