Hundreds of people gathered on Jesup Green in Westport on Sunday for the “Bring Them Home” vigil for Israelis who had been taken hostage by Hamas. First Selectwoman Jennifer Tooker, Police Chief Foti Koskinas, State Senator Ceci Maher (D-26), State Rep. Jonathan Steinberg (D-136) and other community leaders were in attendance.

“We are here this evening to be a light in the darkness,” said Rabbi Michael Friedman of Temple Israel. “As we, the Jewish people have always been since the call of our prophet Isaiah.

"This evening, we demonstrate our commitment to the over 200 hostages still held in Gaza, and we show our strength of support for the state of Israel, which we love,” he said. “And most importantly we do all of that together as one,” said Friedman.

Earlier this month, the Town of Greenwich held a “Stand with Israel Rally” that drew hundreds of supporters and a huge delegation of elected officials and community leaders, including U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, U.S. Congressman Jim Himes, Greenwich First Selectman Fred Camillo, State Senator Ryan Fazio, State Rep. Stephen Meskers, and Selectwoman Lauren Rabin.

Republican National Committeewoman for CT and former U.S. Senate candidate, Leora Levy, and Dr. former candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, Michael Goldstein, joined the rally. They were grateful to see such an outpouring of support for Israel.

Levy condemned "Hamas and its brutal, depraved, horrific attack on civilians in Israel."

She said, "Israel’s defensive military response has no equivalence to what Hamas did and continues to advocate.  Israel has the right, even the responsibility to eliminate Hamas, a terrorist organization, to prevent further attacks on its people.  Israel could have just gone into Gaza but they have waited and have warned the people in northern Gaza to evacuate to the south (approximately 10 miles) for their own safety while Hamas is actually blocking them from evacuating and Egypt has closed the Rafah Crossing.  Israel has put its own soldiers at risk but Israel does not want to kill civilians, their targets are the Hamas leaders and terrorists who murdered, butchered, raped and kidnapped Israeli civilians.  That is moral clarity.  And that is why the American People and political leaders of both parties overwhelmingly support Israel.  I thank God for the goodness and moral clarity of the American People."
